Call for papers and article submission

Type of Articles offered by AHPE

The different formats that can be used to present work in the AHPE include; 

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

These articles will include original research work in different areas of Health Professions Education. Articles must conform to the guidelines given by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) required for submission of articles in biomedical journals. Students in HPE are encouraged to submit their Masters and Doctorate research work.

Format: The articles should follow the Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion pattern.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 5.

Word Count: 3,000 – 4,000 words.

References: Up to 40 references.

 

SHORT REPORT

Articles lacking creativity and novel approach which otherwise would have been considered as original articles come under this section. Journal may return an article not found fit for publication as an original article to be rewritten as a short report. It may also include preliminary report of a bigger research project.

Format: An unstructured abstract of maximum 150 words, introduction (1 paragraph), methodology, results and discussion.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 2.

Word Count: Short reports should be of maximum 1500-2000 words.

References: 15-20 references.

 

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letter can contain a discussion regarding any article from the journal or any other significant development in Health Professions Education. A maximum of 3 authors is allowed. Case studies and research articles, which lack novelty, can be submitted as letters.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 1.

Word Count: 500-700 words.

References: No more than 5 references.

 

REVIEW ARTICLE

These should include systematic reviews and literature reviews. Systematic reviews determine an objective list of criteria, and find all previously published original experimental papers that meet the criteria. They then compare the results presented in these papers. Literature reviews, by contrast, provide a summary of what the authors believe are the best and most relevant prior publications. The authors should divide the topic in appropriate subheadings to make the content easy to comprehend.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 10.

Word Count and No. of References: A minimum of 1500 words and 20 references are mandatory for a review article. However, good reviews should have 4,000-5,000 words with more than 80 references.

 

CASE STUDIES

It includes systematic inquiry, requiring the careful and critical application of research techniques into a topic or question about a relevant professional issue (teaching, learning, assessment, curriculum matters). It may take the form of an audit, case study or action research, or other relevant methodology. The manuscript should demonstrate a high level of scholarship. Authors should bear in mind that case studies are read by practicing health professionals and well-experienced students so complexity should be avoided by clarifying the topic.

No. of Illustrations: Authors are encouraged to add up to 2 figures/pictures/illustrations/charts for comparison and clarification.

Word Count and No. of References: The word limit for a case study is 1500-2000 with no more than 20 references.

 

SPECIAL COMMUNICATION

It includes systematic inquiry, requiring the careful and critical application of research techniques into a topic or question about a relevant professional issue (teaching, learning, assessment, curriculum matters). The article may be written as a theoretical perspective, adding new theory or a different aspect. It may also take the form of a grounded theory, an audit, case study, action research, a cultural study or other relevant methodology. The manuscript should demonstrate a high level of scholarship.

No. of Illustrations: Authors are encouraged to add up to 3 figures/pictures/illustrations/charts for comparison and clarification.

Word Count and No. of References: The word limit for a case study is 1500-2500 with no more than 25 references.

 

PERSPECTIVE ARTICLE

These articles may include significant miscellaneous areas and innovations in medical education. Recent motivating topics related to Health Professions Education which can give rise to new researches and developments may be discussed in perspective articles.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 2.

Word Count and No. of References: 1000-1500 with no more than 10 references.

 

EDITORIAL

Editorials are often solicited however unrequited editorials are also entertained. These are articles that contain annotations and deduction of original articles that have been published previously in the journal. They can have any topic related to scientific knowledge and may reflect personal opinions. Senior Editors, Editors and Advisory Group along with the Distinguished Faculty are eligible for writing editorials. A maximum of three editorials are allowed per issue.

No. of Illustrations: Total number of figures/tables/illustrations allowed is 1.

Word Count and No. of References: 900 words with no more than 10 references.
